I think we could all do better with the rituals in our life. By the way, by ritual I don't necessarily mean meditation or anything spiritual. Rituals are simply the things we do every day. For example, the first thing you do or think when you wake up, or how quickly you eat your food or the way you engage in your relationships, these are all rituals. Think about your typical day from beginning to end and you will see that it is composed of a lot of mini rituals.
Is it your ritual to drink coffee in the morning?
Or to call your mother every evening?
Or to go on facebook for 3 hours a day?
Or to workout every morning at 6am?
Or are you too busy working to even think about doing anything but watch TV and zone out when you get home...well all of those things are your rituals.
To simplify or change your life in small (and big) ways think about your daily rituals
and how you could shift one or two of them to bring about larger change. Experiment with
different areas of your life.
Here are a few things you can try to get started:
1. Start by doing less. I like to limit my daily to-do list to only 3 things I
must absolutely get done that day. If I accomplish more things in that day it's
just a bonus. I know this may seem daunting to some but it's a great way to prioritize and be productive once you get it down.
2. Drink a big glass of water in the morning before consuming anything else. This is a
great cleanse for your organs and also a good reminder to drink more water.
3. Stay connected. When you think of someone, like a friend or family member, reach out to them in that very
moment. Call or text or email or send a letter or smoke signals..anything, just tell them you
are thinking of them. It feels good to be thought of so why not tell people and spread the love.
Of course, sometimes what we learn by trying new rituals is that the old way was actually
faster or less boring or just simply worked better. But we won't know that unless we switch
things up every once in a while. Try a new ritual for a week and see how you feel.
The point is to stay energized, excited and inspired by life no matter what direction you
are trying to go.
What are some of your rituals?
