If someone has been doing very effective work for a long time usually their credibility is high. However, the credibility is based on their results more so than the length of time they have been doing it. Time is only indicative of how long something has been working well or working poorly.
Just because someone has been around for a long time in a certain industry doesn't mean they are better than the new comers. It's good to pay attention to the results people are getting.
I think it is wise to learn from experienced people and those who have been around for a while. It should not intimidate you, or stop you, from trying to achieve the same level of success. In fact, the best and fastest way to achieving success is to model successful people and do exactly what they do. Take this shortcut and work smarter, not harder.
