Whether you have never received a massage or you regularly see a therapist, it is always helpful to know how to get the most out of your session. Having received and given a lot of different styles of bodywork, I've realized that even while you are receiving bodywork you are greatly responsible for your own healing. The therapist is mostly just there facilitating the process of your healing, they are not actually "healing you"...there is a big difference.
Here are some tips on getting the most out of your bodywork session:
--Start by reframing the idea of bodywork being a luxury. It's really a form of preventative health care that has it's best benefits when you do it regularly. Kind of like working out, you won't get fit and healthy by doing it once a year.
--Trust your therapist and be open to what they have to offer. If you let go of your preconceived idea of what needs to happen your experience will be much better.
--Not all therapists will be a great match but you may not know that after just one session. Sometimes it takes a few sessions to find a flow together.
--Communicate with the therapist about what is going on in your body and if you have specific concerns.
--Being present and focusing on relaxing and taking deep breaths will greatly enhance your session. Try to let go of anything that happened before you walked in and anything that needs to happen after you leave.
--The more bodywork you get the more you will know what you need and when you need it. There are many kinds of styles ranging from energy work, deep tissue, Thai massage, and orthopedic massage. All of them are useful for different reasons, try them all to learn more about what your body responds to well.
--Believe it or not, the lighter the touch the more a therapist can feel what's going on. Deep pressure is not always the answer.
--Be on time or early. It's your bodywork time you are cutting into by being late.
-- Know that even if you don't consciously feel very different, there are shifts happening on some level anytime you receive healing touch. Energy is always being exchanged (even if you just give someone a hug!).
When is your next bodywork session?
