Here is an easy analogy to understand the relationship between your conscious and unconscious mind. Your conscious mind is like the captain of a ship. She is in charge and gives commands to the unconscious mind, which is like the crew of the ship. A good crew runs the ship without you needing to even give very many commands. However, the crew also has the power to take over the ship and overthrow the captain, also known as mutiny. When you change something (a habit, a belief, etc) at the unconscious level it is as if there is a mutiny happening on your ship. The crew changes the direction the ship is going or changes how to proceed about a task, or simply creates a whole new way of running the ship. Pretty cool, right.
Conscious mind = Captain of Ship = 5% of who you are (this is where we spend most of our time)
Unconscious mind = Crew of Ship = 95% of who you are (this is where everything is stored and where it all goes down)
One is not better than the other. We need both our conscious and unconscious mind to survive in this world. However, when you want to make a permanent shift in your behavior, thoughts, beliefs, feelings, memories and learning it is much more effective to work with the unconscious mind.
Self hypnosis is a great way to make change at the unconscious level. Try it here!
