1. Strategy - You need to have a plan and strategy for how your will get to where you want to be. If you don't have a plan or vision it will be very difficult to track if, and when, you achieve your goals. For example, if you are trying to find a workout plan that you will stick to, do some research on gyms, training philosophies, costs, locations, etc. and determine what motivates you to keep going. There is so much information available now that it makes it pretty easy to find something that works best for you. Make sure you try a lot of different strategies to see what works best for you. Don't repeat the same things over and over that don't work (that is the definition of insanity). Change your strategy!
2. Story - The story we tell ourselves about a certain part of our life is exactly what we see and feel and experience. This is an important one that many of us may not think of consciously. If your story around health is that you've tried everything and nothing works, then that is what you will continue to experience. If your story around relationships is that you don't deserve them or nobody is worthy then that is what you will experience also. Your stories and self talk are very powerful. Pay attention and change your story!
3. State - Your state will determine how you feel and the types of decisions you make from moment to moment. Most successful, happy people work on being in optimal states as much as possible. If your physical and emotional states are not in great shape most of the time then it will become much more difficult to stay motivated to shift any other part of your life. The fastest way to change your state is to move your body. Change your state!
When I'm feeling in a funk about something I like to start by changing my state. For me that means going for a hike or run or doing any physical activity. Once my state changes it's easier for me to change my story and therefore my strategy. Having built in ways to check in with yourself about these three things regularly is a great way to consistently measure where you're at and where you're going.
